Growing up on a fruit farm near
Tonbridge, I developed a
love for the Kent countryside, and the things that give Kent its special
character, such as oast houses, orchards and hop gardens, which are often
subjects in my work.
It is a challenge to approach this subject matter in a
fresh and honest way, especially at a time when the farming landscape is
changing so dramatically. Apart from wishing to reflect the way people manage
and change the land, I also enjoy painting the effects of light and season on
natural shapes and colours, particularly the intricate pattern to be found in
an extensive view.
